Name: Zoe Alleyne Washburne
Canon: Firefly/Serenity
Original or Alternate Universe: Original
Canon Point: Midway through Leaves on the Wind (from the desert planet)

Setting: tl;dr: space western with some Chinese trappings and American civil war allegories
History:Firefly wiki bio and also I'm linking to their synopsis of Leaves on the Wind because it calls it an "upcoming comic" in the bio

Personality: Zoe is career military, and consequently thinks about most situations tactically. Rescuing her best friend and her husband from torture quickly became a cost/benefit analysis, not in a cold way like they didn't matter to her but in a way where she was able to step back from her emotions to wonder 'what do I need to do to make sure that we all survive this' and get it done. She is much more comfortable solving her problems with her shotgun rather than diplomacy, however she does have a sense for when words are liable to work better. She can make difficult decisions on her own when she has to but she prefers to be part of a team. However despite having a reputation for pretty much always following orders, she's willing to disobey even superiors she respects if she feels strongly enough about it.

She knows her way around many different types of weapons and is almost casually proficient with them. However, she also has a tender side and tends to be a sort of "house mother" to others on board Serenity. She's the oldest of the women on board and takes that to heart, acting as a confidant for Kaylee (particularly re: Kaylee's man problems, but also as a sort of shield against Mal's blundering attempts at dealing with women accidentally hurting her feelings), a protector for River (coaxing her out from the storage compartment when she got scared of Book's hair) and a friend for Inara (when Inara is decommissioned in the comics, Zoe lends her clothes). She remembers the pain of losing so many people in the war, particularly Serenity Valley, and is very adamant about not wanting to leave anyone behind even when it might be to the detriment of their own safety. The only reason Mal's plan to send everyone away when the ship broke down in Out of Gas worked is that Zoe was unconscious at the time, and as soon as she woke up she forced the others to return to Serenity. As much as she knows from experience that you can't save everyone, she hasn't really accepted in her heart that you can't save everyone, so this is definitely a topic that can cause her to react more emotionally than she'd like. In the film, she angrily confronts Mal about leaving the settlers behind after the Reaver attack despite the fact that there really wasn't anything that they could have done for them.

Zoe is a very direct person. She can't understand why someone would use fifteen words where five would do or dance around an issue, saying things they don't mean. Even with Mal, a person she respects highly both as a superior officer and as a friend, she is very willing to tell him when she thinks he's making a poor choice or otherwise being kind of an idiot. Which, honestly, is most of the time. Most of the time she has a very calm, stoic outward appearance even when internally she is reacting emotionally. This is an advantage for her work acting as Mal's 'muscle' in negotiations because she looks quite intimidating, however it's a disadvantage when she has to act because she's terrible at it. She had to pretend that she'd run away to marry Mal once and she was so bad at it that it's almost embarrassing that it worked. The calm affect also means that she has a cold and terrible anger. Zoe doesn't anger easily but when she gets caught up in it, it can lead to terrible decisions. After the war, she was so traumatized by what had happened at Serenity Valley and the POW camp that she joined a terrorist group to keep on hitting them even though she didn't really believe in the cause, and after Wash was killed if Jayne hadn't stopped her she would have just kept on firing until she was dead.

Growing up on a ship has made her more comfortable in enclosed spaces, and she never likes to be planetside too long. She's used to wilderness survival and is pretty used to the sort of chaos that a temporary base camp tends to have around it, but the strictly ordered nature of Core cities freaks her out a bit. It's kind of a contradiction because due to the dangers inherent in space travel, life on a spaceship has a pretty strict order to it and that order is a comfort. However, the order on a planet which is inherently a more chaotic space, feels oppressive.

While the battle of Serenity Valley didn't change Zoe the way it changed Mal, she still carries some pretty deep scars from it. Her friendship with Mal, another survivor, and later her relationship with Wash, helped her to overcome the darkness and be happy again. However, after witnessing her husband's death, she basically landed right back in Serenity Valley. However, she is determined to try and survive and thrive in his memory and also for the sake of their infant daughter. At her canonpoint she has sacrificed her own freedom to protect her friends and her child, so while she misses Emma terribly, she at least knows that she's safe. She has an unshakable faith that her friends are coming to rescue her.

Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations: No superpowers here. Zoe is a standard human. She has significant military and guerrilla type warfare training and experience so her combat skills (particularly with guns) and wilderness survival skills (it seems like the Unification War took place in almost every imaginable type of environment and now she's fist-fighting dudes in the desert) have been honed through that. Basic first aid training, super basic spaceship maintenance and repair. She's basically the substitute everything on Serenity because Mal trusts her to get things done so it's a bit Jack of all trades, master of none.

Inventory: She's coming from a prison camp so she doesn't really have anything to bring.
Species/Race: Human
Appearance: As portrayed by Gina Torres. Quite tall, brown skin and eyes, huge mass of dark curly hair - just starting to see its first strands of grey - that she usually wears pulled back from her face. Not in quite as good shape as Firefly-era Gina Torres due to the fact that she gave birth and almost died relatively recently.

Log Sample: “My friends are gonna come for me.” The statement has become a part of the ritual of life for Zoe on the prison planet at this point: she wakes up, cleans herself up as much as she can, spends the whole day fighting other inmates under the scorching sun to keep the weaker ones off her back, then is thrown back into her cell to bind her wounds and tell the one-eyed woman sitting on the next bed that her friends are going to take her home. The ritual varies a bit, of course. Some days it's all that she can do to clean her wounds, gasp the phrase out like a prayer and go to sleep; other days she says it with such unshakable confidence that the other woman looks up from that old paperback book that she's read to tatters just to scoff at her more thoroughly.

Today, she grunts in acknowledgment but doesn't look up. 'Everyone on this rock has friends coming for them,' she's told Zoe enough times that the noncommittal sound can basically take its place in the daily argument. Zoe methodically dips the strips of cloth that pass for bandages here into the bowl of water at her feet and binds her torn up knuckles. The fight today had been rough, but she'd won easily. Maybe she's getting stronger after all. “We got through the war alive, so we've done the impossible more than once.” Is she defending them to her cellmate or to herself? “They're gonna get me offa this rock.”

And they are. She knows with absolute conviction that they'd fight to the ends of the 'Verse for her, and she's going to see her daughter again if it's the last thing she does.

Comms Sample: [video post – a woman's face appears on the screen. She's been working out and looks it: tendrils of hair are plastered to her face with sweat.]

I gotta get back in shape.

[It came out angrier than intended, after all how is she supposed to defend anything when she's not at her best? Why isn't she at her best already? She composes her expression and restates]

I'm tryin' to build my strength back up, anyone got any jobs that need doing? Not gonna pretend that I'm the most technical or scientific but I got a strong back, willingness to work, and wilderness survival experience if a body needs anything built or repaired.

[She tries to brush the hair off her forehead and is visibly irritated when it sticks. She's used to the heat but this humidity is a lot to deal with. She doesn't quite sigh but the sentiment of one is there.]

Weather here the way it is, can't imagine there's any shortage of work to be done on the shelters. Let me know.
